Andalucía is no ordinary territory

And last Tuesday, it proved this once again. At IMPACTA in Andalusia, more than 100 of us came together with a shared vision: the economy can (and must) generate positive social and environmental impact. Real, measurable and transformative impact.

From Open Value, alongside Impact Fund of Foundations (FdF) and Global Social Impact Investments (GSI), we had the opportunity to share our understanding of social investment. But, above all, to listen.

Because the potential is already there. Andalusia has talent, fabric and purpose. What's needed is to join the dots. And that's exactly what happened and what our allies from NESI Forum.

Generate (another) space where investors, public administrations and entrepreneurs can begin to dialogue about how to build a better, more sustainable future together.

One of the key moments was the panel of authorities that I had the immense honour of moderating.

Different representatives, different competencies, different perspectives. But a common idea: public-private collaboration is not an option. It is the only way to achieve transformative results.

There was also time to move from talk to action.

During the day, very specific lines were identified:

  • Detect and support impact enterprises from the territory
  • Connecting investors and projects more effectively
  • Incorporate the impact on public policy
  • Boosting public procurement with social criteria
  • Develop impact contracts
  • And move forward in blended finance

Because the impact doesn't just happen, it's built. And as a society, we have a lot at stake because Andalusia's challenges are numerous and complex:

  • Social and affordable housing
  • Rural depopulation
  • Education tailored to the real needs of the market
  • Young talent retention
  • Social and work inclusion of more vulnerable people
  • Climate change

Great challenges. But also great opportunities.

At Open Value, we see it every day: Impact happens when capital, knowledge, and willpower align. And what we saw in Malaga is that this alignment is possible. We must be able to turn these conversations into fruitful collaborations; and that collaboration... into impact.

Driving the impact ecosystem in Spain and beyond

Since 2017, María Ángeles León has played a key role in promoting a culture of purpose-driven and financially disciplined investment.

Her leadership has helped to change the way in which capital is mobilised for social change, not only as a funding tool, but as a driving force for transformation.

Open Value was founded on a long-term commitment to making a difference by its founders, María Ángeles León and Francisco García Paramés. For more than 25 years, they have dedicated part of their personal wealth to initiatives that improve the lives of vulnerable communities, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa.

Initially, through traditional philanthropy, they later adopted more sustainable approaches, inspired by pioneers like Acumen and Yunus Social Business. That journey gave rise to the Open Value Foundation (OVF) in 2017.
