This assumption of responsibility and interest in impact investing is reflected in the Latest study by the Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN), which reports that 85% of global asset managers are making impact investments in response to client demand.

This gives rise to a new way of doing finance based on the joint valuation of performance, risk, and impact, in which financial markets are fundamental to supporting solutions to global problems. Consequently, it is necessary to fully understand this new concept of investment, so that a greater number of citizens and companies adopt this form of investment as a means of effective participation in resolving social and environmental conflicts.

The second is the demand to learn from past mistakes in the field of investment, because, just as happened with microfinance, impact investing is not in itself an appropriate or inappropriate type of investment, but simply a way to invest capital that will generate positive impacts only if used appropriately. Consequently, it is necessary for the impact investment industry itself to manage and measure such impacts to demonstrate their effectiveness, while research provides scientific rigour to the results achieved.

Regarding the research contribution, it was in 2007 that the term “impact investing” was associated with the proactive search for impact with financial return, meaning it is still a nascent industry. Consequently, existing research to date is mostly descriptive and exploratory in nature, as this reality as such has only existed for a very few years to be investigated quantitatively. Therefore, It's about supporting the sector's efforts to achieve greater consistency and rigour in the way impact is measured, while also promoting advancements in research. to bridge the gap between the scientific vision of impact assessment and the measurement of impact in industry.

These two facts highlight the need to to strengthen the identity of this new type of investment, to bring its concept, market, ecosystem and measurement and management practices closer to society, and thereby improve the scale and effectiveness of impact investment.

To achieve this goal, the UAM – Open Value Foundation Chair in Impact Investing recently published the “White Paper on Impact Investment”which systematically, clearly, and rigorously explains all aspects relating to impact investing: background and concept; the current characteristics of its market; the actors that make up its ecosystem; the different types of financial assets that characterise this industry; the various methodologies for managing and measuring economic and/or social and/or environmental impact; and finally, the challenges that impact investing currently presents.

Open Value Foundation also sponsors the Master's in Impact Investing from the Autonomous University of Madrid, contributing, thus, very significantly, to the development of educational programmes that make society more aware of this necessary assumption of social and environmental responsibility Impact investing entails investing in companies, organisations, and funds with the intention of generating a measurable social and environmental impact alongside a financial return.

Therefore, we encourage our readers to delve deeper into impact investing by reading White Paper on Impact Investment, which brings great clarity and systematisation to the numerous concepts linked to this area, and to train as a high-quality professional in this industry through the Master's in Impact Investing from UAM.
