I've dedicated a good part of my professional career and personal commitment to reform of the global migratory regime<\/strong>. It obsesses me, the injustice and stupidity of a system that denies everyone's right to find security and prosperity<\/strong>, although they may be far from where they were born. Fortune would have it that, since 2015, my vocation has found a home in the Foundation for Cause<\/a>, a small social innovation exercise created with three professionals who reached the same point as me, from different corners. And this dream remains standing thanks to the complicity of organisations such as the Open Value Foundation and Ashoka<\/a>, who have been absolutely key since 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Por Causa is an organisation of Research, journalism and new narratives<\/strong> based on the conviction that the world does not change unless people are well informed. That a democracy worthy of the name needs its relevant affairs to be debated far more independently and better informed than is currently the case. And few issues are more decisive than that of human mobility. Migrations not only affect those who move, but transform the places they leave and the places they arrive at. Chosen, orderly, and safe migration is one of the most fabulous sources of prosperity that history has known.<\/strong> Unfortunately, it is also the subject of hatred, disinformation and populist manipulation, as we have starkly experienced during Brexit, the European refugee crisis, or the arrival of foreign children in our country. Those kinds of debates, which define us as a society far more than we sometimes dare to admit, are the debates in which Causa wants to wallow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our model is a wonderful experiment. What we do is combine the capabilities of a very young and dazzling team of journalists, social researchers, and storytellers. Together, we produce powerful stories which we then publish through traditional and innovative platforms. Over these years, we've been part of existing conversations, such as the refugee crisis in Europe, seeking approaches and stories that shed light on a debate that has become too superficial and partisan. Stories like that of the Migrant Control Industry, which questions the economic and political interests that perpetuate this broken migration model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But we don't want to just talk about what others are talking about. That's why the research team I coordinate dedicates a lot of effort to understanding and explaining the alternatives to this failure: What are the economic, legal, and political foundations that would allow us to achieve that fair and intelligent migratory model to which we aspire.<\/strong> To this end, we have drawn on the experience of countries such as New Zealand and Canada, established partnerships with some of the most respected research centres in this field, and opened up spaces for dialogue between the administration, the private sector, civil society, and migrants themselves. The debate over the regularisation of almost half a million immigrants in Spain is a recent example of our added value<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And everything, absolutely everything, rests on respectful, inclusive, and, I hope, effective narrative tools. Substitute narratives and narratives of love versus the strategy of hate and polarisation that is suffocating public debate in Spain and beyond. To be honest, I sometimes think that our work on the communication tool \u2013 which we share and constantly improve \u2013 is even more important than what we communicate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today I am certain that Causa has been a success. If our perpetual economic precariousness were to force us to close tomorrow, everything we have done up to this day would have made sense, it would have changed our lives and those of so many others. But I know we are not going to close. Because thanks to examples like Open Value, I have come to know the generosity and lucidity of those around us. Those who know why a project like ours is indispensable are not many, but I assure you they are enough to keep us afloat and change the world around them.
