During our first few days in Ghana, we travelled to Tamale in the north of the country, a predominantly agricultural area. There, we gained insights into the operations of a company undergoing Due Diligence by GSIF, the international fund for Global Social Impact Investments (GSII)<\/a><\/strong> invests in high social impact companies that contribute to improving the livelihoods of the most vulnerable people in sub-Saharan Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Open Value Foundation's measurement team also carries out the measurement and management of the impact of the (GSII) funds.
The site visit has helped us clarify some issues that will enable us to make a much more informed decision about the investment. Meeting face-to-face with the people behind the companies being evaluated is fundamental to identifying their sense of purpose and their commitment to the company's social mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back in Accra, we met up with some of the team Impact Investing Ghana<\/a><\/strong>, organisation that works alongside public administration leaders, social enterprises, investors, philanthropists, development agencies and other entities to develop the impact ecosystem in the country. They have been instrumental in helping us understand the state of the sector in Ghana and identify potential investments according to the investment criteria of Open Value Foundation and GSIF.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Collaborating with Impact Investing Ghana has allowed us to identify companies founded and led by local people, many of them focused on improving the agricultural value chain and food security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We were also able to visit Kosmos Innovation Centre<\/a>,<\/strong> Kosmos Energy's corporate social investment programme, located in Accra. KIC is focused on fostering innovation and applying viable commercial solutions to Ghana\u2019s key challenges, particularly agriculture. Since its establishment, over 800 young people have gone through KIC, more than 300 direct and formal jobs have been created, and over 100,000 smallholder farmers have benefited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The KIC team accompanied us to visit the company Techshelta, in the north of Accra. This company specialises in agricultural solutions that contribute to climate change mitigation, such as greenhouse cultivation, and in training young people in innovative farming techniques, thus improving their chances of finding quality employment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of our tour, we visited the company Green Lion<\/a>,<\/strong> inverted by GSIF. There we held meetings with the company's management team and saw how the day-to-day operations work, specifically the distribution of goods to small businesses in Accra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We also visited the company Baluwo<\/a>,<\/strong> Open Value Foundation's reversed future. Baluwo offers an easy, fast, and secure way to buy mobile top-ups, prepaid electricity, food, and building materials online for the customer's family and friends from anywhere in the world. In Accra, we met Nat, the head of Baluwo's operations in Ghana. She is responsible for identifying new shops through which immigrant individuals can order consumer goods and their families can collect them. She also personally ensures that all operations are carried out completely and securely. It was very fortunate to meet Nat, as she herself is a beneficiary of Baluwo's services. Her and her family's satisfactory experience led her to get this job.

Without a doubt, these days in Ghana have been a great opportunity to continue learning about the country's impact investment ecosystem, gradually increasing the fund's and foundation's presence in Western Africa.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
