According to data from the EVPA (European Venture Philanthropy Association) and the GSG (Global Steering Group for Impact Investment), European impact investments totalled 80,000 million euros in 2021, a 26% increase on the previous year. In Spain, the volume of impact investment had stabilised at around 2,400 million euros as of December 2021.

How does the report reflect ‘Impact investing in Spain in 2021’ According to a report published by SpainNAB, foundations are one of the potential providers of this type of capital. These organisations can make impact investments by using their endowment funds as an investment strategy aligned with their mission, or by using their operating budgets to generate impact in an economically sustainable manner. However, the SpainNAB report identified only nine foundation vehicles, which managed 229.9 million euros, representing 10% of the market.

Foundation Fund was born in 2019 as a pioneering initiative in our country that aims to Introduce non-profit organisations to impact investing in a practical and collaborative way. The premise is simple: faced with the fear that foundations might experience when venturing into unknown territory, the Foundation Fund offers them the opportunity to acquire knowledge on impact investing in a theoretical-practical and collaborative manner, minimising risk and capital outlay.

Following training provided by professionals from the impact investment sector, each foundation decides whether to participate in a shared investment vehicle, where each entity has an equal stake and an equal say in decision-making.

3 years after its launch, the Foundation of Foundations initiative is now consolidated and is attracting increasing interest. Proof of this is the recent commitment of Google.org y Ashoka for the project through Impacta+, an initiative born from the collaboration between these two organisations, with the aim of generating a systemic impact in the social entrepreneurship sector to make it more diverse, inclusive, and accessible. Specifically, Impacta+'s support for the Fondo de Fundaciones is to create more funding opportunities for any early-stage entrepreneur in Spain, particularly for those profiles traditionally underrepresented (women entrepreneurs, entrepreneurs from migrant backgrounds, or those with low-to-medium educational levels).

On the other hand, The third edition of the FdF training programme will begin on 2 October., which opens up the possibility for a new promotion of foundations to join the investment vehicle and begin to put into practice what they have learned and explore the benefits of impact investing, thereby generating financing opportunities for social entrepreneurs from any context. You can learn more at website of the initiative.

Since the Foundation of Funds was launched, There are already more than 20 non-profit organisations that have invested with this shared vehicle, with which two calls for applications have already been launched and more than 100 social enterprises evaluated. From the first call, Apadrina un Olivo and Robin Good were selected, becoming the first two investments of the Fund of Foundations. More than 60 Spanish impact companies participated in this second call, and finally, Plant on Demand and La Hormiga Verde have been the companies chosen for investment.

Plant on Demand It is the first and only platform in Spain that offers digital tools allowing small organic producers to automate processes, open their online shop, and cooperate with other local producers by unifying logistics, sharing storage space, or grouping products into joint catalogues.

The Green Ant It is a special employment centre for disabled workers that is dedicated to the correct management of electronic waste (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment – WEEE), from collection to recovery.

Albéniz Foundation · Alliance for Solidarity Foundation · Altamar Foundation · Anesvad Foundation · Antonio Aranzábal Foundation · ActionAid · Boscana Foundation · CODESPA Foundation · Caja Extremadura Foundation · Creas Foundation · The Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation · ECODE Foundation · Entreculturas Foundation · EXIT Foundation · Álvarez Quirós Brothers Foundation Investarf Foundation Roberto Rivas Foundation · San Prudencio Foundation · Awake Dreaming Foundation · Open Value Foundation

For more information: www.fondodefundaciones.es

Contact

Ana Maestre
Foundation Fund

amaestre@fondodefundaciones.es
687 99 19 64

Madrid, 15 de septiembre de 2023.- La inversión de impacto está ganando impulso.
