Field visits are a fundamental (and perhaps the most exciting) part of our work. Each visit has a purpose, but we usually take advantage of all of them to attend events within the impact ecosystem in the country, meet with potential collaborators, follow up on invested companies, and discover new projects.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This also happened in Accra, trying to fit the entire agenda into a very well-spent week. For me, it was the first time travelling to Ghana, so I went with the expectation of identifying similarities and differences with the East African countries I know and seeing what the best opportunities are for investing in social impact in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For us, the journey begins long before we arrive, as for the experience to be worthwhile, it is essential to prepare it with sufficient time. Likewise, in addition to carrying out the relevant formalities (obtaining a visa, etc.), we contact various agents to whom we introduce ourselves and offer a meeting. Of course, we also notify the entrepreneurs with whom we have a relationship so that they can schedule our visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The result of this preparation phase is Our stay calendar<\/strong>; in which we try to fit in two or three daily activities depending on the distances. Once we've finalized it (although it always undergoes modifications) and have all the contacts of the people we'll be meeting there, we're ready to fly.


<\/strong>Day 0<\/strong>
We arrived in Accra a day late as we missed our connection in Paris, so we're already having to make our first adjustments. Of our initial impressions, I remember the sweltering heat, the good manners and courtesy of our hosts, and the apparent order and tranquility of the streets compared to those in other cities like Nairobi or Kampala.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At OVF, we are fortunate to have our colleague Ana, who manages flights, accommodation, etc., when we go away. She also looks after us, ensuring the hotel where we're staying that week has everything we need to be comfortable and even allows us to receive visitors and hold some meetings there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 1<\/strong>
Two social entrepreneurs come first thing and present their projects to us:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leticia, of Fibre-Transwaste<\/a>,<\/strong> biodegradable disposable sanitary pads at an affordable price from maize waste, the most cultivated cereal in Ghana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mathias, of Akofresh<\/a>,<\/strong> It markets refrigerated containers powered by solar energy to prevent post-harvest losses that affect thousands of smallholders in the rural area from which it comes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both give us a lot of information about the training programmes, incubators and accelerators that offer greater resources to social ventures in the seed phase in Ghana. Both projects have received various recognitions and are supported by several ecosystem agents: African Impact Initiative<\/a>, Innovative Africa Challenge<\/a>, Green Africa Youth Organisation <\/a>, Kosmos Innovation Centre<\/a>, SE Ghana<\/a> or African Leadership University \u2013 Scholars Programme<\/a> some of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We invite you to join us on our tour of the Agromyx<\/a>,<\/strong> A company that produces fruit, grain, and cereal powders for nutrient-rich juices and smoothies that combat malnutrition and supplement the diet of ill people, the elderly, and children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We learned about this latest project through the fund Africa Eats<\/a>,<\/strong> which invests in agribusiness companies in Africa and provides training and technical assistance for them to scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 2
<\/strong>We went to the event \u201cGhana Impact Summit\u201d<\/a>,<\/strong> organised by the association Impact Investing Ghana<\/a> <\/strong>(equivalent to our SpainNAB). In it, throughout the day, we host presentations, panels and participatory workshops on topics as relevant as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
